Toledo is the Southern most district of Belize. The villages include San Felipe, Boom Creek (a Mayan village) and Barranco (the southern most and last Garinagu (Garifuna) village in Belize).
These villages are mainly accessible by boat. It is hours by road however, these villages have makeshift gravel roads which are usually deteriorate by floods and constant rain which makes it difficult to travel through certain times of the year because Toledo district has the highest rain fall in the country (15 inches per annum). 90% of these villages don’t have roads only walking trails which sometimes take them hours of walking to get to the main roads.
As I was driving down the unpaved road towards the southernmost part of Punta Gorda Toledo district you can see the natural beauty of Belize. You can see the children very happy and you meet very friendly people on the way. You don’t see many cars, you mainly see people riding their bicycles, walking, or on motorbikes. Most houses are made out of wood and leaf roofs. One invited me inside their house. I had a short interview with a lady that appeared to be in her 40’s. She said I was the first dentist that she ever saw in her life and that she has never received any dental treatment. I told her that we are trying to change that for her, her family and the rest of the people in the villages.
